The Blues announced today that they have placed defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo on the IR. Supposedly Colaiacovo has been experiencing concussion-like symptoms and so according to NHL rules, he cannot play until symptoms subside. Colaiacovo left early in the game Saturday after hitting his head on the boards when he became tangled up with a Predator's player. He did not return. Colaiacovo is eligible to play Sunday, but Armstrong says there is no timetable for his
return.
To accommodate for the injury the Blues have grabbed Edmonton Oiler's defenseman Taylor Chorney off of waivers today. Chorney has played a total of 56 games at the NHL level, and is looking for more chances with the Blues.
The Blues don't play again until Thursday, and it is doubtful that after Monday's performance that he would switch up the lineup. It is possible that Chorney will get his chance, but from what I've heard, it's doubtful unless Colaiacovo is out for an extended time.
So why did they claim him?
I think the Blues feel that they had to make a move in case they dealt with anymore injuries while Colaiacovo is out. One thing that Jeremy Rutherford has pointed out several times, is that the one of the Blues' weaknesses, is their depth on the Blue line. This move is risk free, but also a chance for the Blues to keep Ian Cole in Peoria to get some quality playing time instead of sitting the bench.
Does this show how the Blues really feel about Cole?
Not at all. The Blues did what they thought was best for Cole. There is no need to call up Cole for a few games, when they have a full roster on defense even with the injury. Like I said before, it is unlikely that Chorney plays unless there is an injury, and Cole is better served playing in the AHL rather than sitting in the NHL.
