The Blues were unable to stage a comeback late against the Avalanche
1st period
The Avalanche took it to the Blues in the 1st and it all started with a puck that was shot from the point by Matt Hunwick and was tipped by Paul Stastny past Elliott. The goal was helped by a Blues faceoff loss and the positioning of Pietrangelo in front of the net as the puck was tipped by Stastny and went off of his skate.
The Avalanche used the momentum to their advantage as they scored another goal less than 2 minutes later
The goal was scored by Cody Mcleod when Elliott went to clear the puck from in front of the net, but didn't get enough behind it....The puck went to Mcleod who put it under the pads of Elliot.
Things started to go the Blues' way as they received 3 straight PP's and though they were unable to score, they clearly gained back the momentum going into the locker room.
2nd period
The Blues carried the momentum over from the end of the 1st period and started the scoring at 3:01
David Backes brought the puck into the Avalanche zone and instead of taking it "full speed ahead" he pulled up and fired the puck into the top corner of the net.
Backes' goal was huge as it sparked the Blues and led to another goal
Chris Stewart gave the Blues the tying goal as he did what he does best--camps in front of the goaltender and waits for a rebound. This time the rebound came from a Patrik Berglund shot, and Stewart jumped on it and put it by Giguere
The Avalanche responded quickly and this time the goal came from former Blue Jay McClement as the puck slid (along with a Blues defender) into the net. The net did come of it's moorings, but upon further review it was determined to be a "good goal"
3rd period
A slow and for the most part action less period that consisted of mostly Blues chances that they were unable to capitalize on and the Avalanche held on to the 3-2 lead to win.
