Steen, Russell likely to return Thursday

Blues forward Alex Steen and defenseman Kris Russell could and likely will play Thursday.

The Blues have been without both Kris Russell (groin) and Alex Steen (concussion) since the 12/27 game against the Detroit Red Wings.

While its not confirmed that they will play in Thursday's game, it is very likely that Thursday marks their return.

So lets view each player's impact separately

On Steen's Return

The 27 year old forward has been perhaps the Blues most versatile player in past years, and this year has been no different.  Whether he's manning the points on the PP, playing solid defense, or contributing to/scoring goals on offense, the Blues can always rely on Steen.

Steen, who has been having an All Star season, was injured in either the game against the Stars or the one against the Red Wings (he's not for certain which) and in turn the injury put an end to his All Star hopes.

The Blues have battled through his injury and continue to win games, but it will be nice to have Steen back before entering the months of February and March that consist of many away games.

Steen is very good on the road as he has 7 of his 13 goals on opponent's ice and he contributes both offensively and defensively as well as on the PP on a nightly basis.

With Steen's return comes the hard decision of who will sit.....

Likely Porter will be sent down upon Steen's return since he has a two-way contract.  Ryan Reaves (who has just recently signed a new contract extension) is under a one-way contract and would have to clear waivers to be sent down.

On Russell's Return

Kris Russell has played 21 games as a Note this season since coming over from the Blue Jackets in a trade involving former Blue Nikita Nikitin.

Russell has 3 goals and 2 assists as a Blue this season.

Russell is a very good skater and is very good at moving the puck out of the zone and even taking it up ice himself.

He gets shots through from the point and creates scoring opportunities often.

It will be very good to have him back on defense for the Blues but as a result, I would expect Ian Cole to be sent down.
